These 40 paintings are made in series and built up in layers in a form of self-collaboration. Each image starts with the chance action of
spattered dilute red paint and ink, like spilled wine or blood. This is then responded to and the surface reworked though various self-sabotages
and rescues, evolving the images in a continual game of consequences.
The resulting characters are part street-drunks, part beaten up cartoon characters - all spattered in Claret. Formed from mis-remembered clumps of art history and dollops of pop-culture like Russell Hoban’s warped spiritual ritual Punch and Judy show in Ridley Walker. Here the characters wrestle with themselves, contorted and dis-jointed, uncomfortably torn between figuration and abstraction, contradictions of fast and slow, heavy and light, funny and grotesque, congealment and disintegration, construction and destruction held at some point between collapse and alignment, caught at an uncomfortable point of transition.
The paintings have been scanned and inkjet poster printed onto 280gsm Satin Pearl photo-paper A4 size in an edition of 3 individual prints. Additionally a further 2 prints of each Exploding Head are collected in a limitied edition of 2 boxed sets of 40.
